"How many pages should my resume be?"
Good question. The short answer is: it depends. If you've been in IT since 1982 and you've touched 4 decades of technology, chances are, your resume is going to be long. But if you're a new grad with no real world experience, does having a 5 page resume with ALL your high school & college projects make sense?
Recruiters, HR folks & hiring managers don't have time to read 5 page resumes. Unless you're going for a job in academia, I personally feel like a resume should be 2-3 pages with concise bullet points that highlights what you did in each role.
If there's a ton of extra history, at the bottom of the resume, where References used to go, you can say something like, "ask me for additional experience."
Recently, I helped a friend chop down her cherry tree of a resume. She had so much content, it was hard to stay focused. Because she's my friend, I had the patience to go through each of her roles (each role had 15-20 bullet points) but as I was editing, I thought ... if I came across this resume in a search, I'd throw it in the proverbial trash. In fact, she was the inspiration for this week's #blogpost.
Here's a terrible analogy but resumes, like clothes or cars or make-up are expressions of ourselves. Make your resume the best it can because it's an expression of you!
Happy job hunting!
