Job Seeker Exhaustion

Apparently 187,000 new jobs were created in the month of July. Unemployment remains at a low 3.5%. Hooray! But, this figure seems a little misleading. I say this because if thousands & thousands of new jobs were created then why are so people still unemployed? Why am I still seeing posts (on sites like LinkedIn) about lay offs & reductions in the workforce?

This is when job seeker exhaustion kicks in high gear. As a job seeker, you grind every day to make sure your resume's in tip-top shape, you apply to roles where you're a good fit, you're networking like a mad woman, so on & so on. Days turn into weeks, weeks into months. Soon, 6-8 months have passed and there are no prospects in sight. Sound familiar?

As a lifelong recruiter, I hear this complaint all the time. And, I say with love ... stick with it. Don't let the rejections get you down! This is a very difficult & challenging time in the American workplace. Silicon Valley has been decimated, the economy is crazy town with gas & food prices sky rocketing. But, it's like a balloon: what goes up must come down. This is when I say, stay the course. Make sure your mental health is strong, lean on family & friends for support, be gentle & kind to yourself because eventually you will get what you need & want. It might just take a bit longer than the previous cycle.

It's so easy for me to say & harder to hear but don't let job seeker exhaustion pull you into the darkness. Keep your attitude, outlook positive and I KNOW good things will come.

Happy job hunting!
